Lord
Buddha has stated in the Mahaparinibbana
Sutra, delivered by him in Kushinagar that…
(1) The place where he was born i.e. Lumbini
(2) The place where he attained the
enlightenment i.e. Buddhagaya
(3) The place where he delivered the first
sermon i.e. Sarnath and
(4) The place where he entered into
Mahaparinirvana i.e. Kushinagar.
…are places which bring about feelings of
spiritual awe and enlightenment and are
therefore essential places of pilgrimage for
those who believe in Him.
Delhi,
capital city of the Federal Republic of
India, is one of India's fastest growing
cities. It sprawls out over the west bank of
the Yamuna River, straddling the river. The
city has two distinct parts, Old Delhi & New
Delhi. Old Delhi is centered on the Red Fort
built by Emperor Shah Jehan between 1636 and
1658.
While the streets of Old Delhi are narrow
and bustling, its beauty and serenity lie
within the courtyards of the main buildings.
Delhi has some of the finest museums in the
country, and its boutiques and shopping
arcades offer access to a wealth of
traditional and contemporary crafts, from
all over the country. New Delhi, known for
its tree-lined and spacious boulevards, was
proclaimed the capital of India by the
British architect Sir Edwin Lutyens
(1869-1944).
Located
near the city of Aurangabad in Maharashtra,
the famous Ajanta and Ellora are cave
shrines cut out of rock, by hand, and rank
amongst some of the most outstanding
specimens of ancient Indian architectural
heritage. The 34 caves at Ellora and the 29
caves at Ajanta, remained shrouded in
obscurity for over a millennium, until John
Smith, a British Army Officer, accidentally
stumbled upon them while on a hunting
expedition in 1819. Ajanta has been
designated as a World Heritage Site, to be
preserved as an artistic legacy that will
come to inspire and enrich the lives of
generations to come.
Kashmir
is one of India’s most beautiful and popular
regions and has been since the time of the
great Mughal emperors. Most famous for the
houseboats on picturesque Dal Lake, you’ve
not really been to Kashmir until you’ve
stayed on one. Jammu Kashmir is the first
Himalayan state of India, but it actually
comprises three regions: the foothill plains
of Jammu; the lakes and blue valleys of
Kashmir rising to alpine passes, and the
high altitude plains and starkly beautiful
mountains of Ladakh, which lies beyond the
passes. Adventure opportunities abound in
this region, whether your interest be
trekking, mountaineering or going on a
trans- Himalayan Jeep Safari.
The
small state of Kerala, which represents just
1% of India’s land mass, is considered to be
one of India's most beautiful states. It is
a very rural state with most of the
population living in villages but is
culturally and scenically diverse. Kerala
has two national parks, ten wildlife
sanctuaries and two bird sanctuaries.
Situated
on the Malabar Coast, the land of fun, sun
and elation, Goa is the smallest state of
India in terms of area and forth smallest in
term of population. Goa has a tropical
climate, and is surrounded by the state of
Karnataka to the east and south, Maharashtra
to the north and Arabian Sea to the west.
This tiny state is spread over an area of
3,702 square km and has a coastline of 65
miles. Goa is also called the beach capital
of India, most famous for its beautiful and
golden beaches. |
